OVERVIEW

Set off from El Calafate at 9:00 AM and embark on a scenic full-day journey across the Patagonian steppe. You’ll travel along routes flanking Lake Argentino, the Santa Cruz and La Leona Rivers, and through valleys framed by the Andes. After stops at historic sites and panoramic lookouts, you’ll arrive at La Leona’s fossil site, where you’ll hike among exposed petrified logs—some over a meter in diameter—and learn about Patagonia’s prehistoric flora and faunal changes over epochs. Lunch is served mid-tour, and you’ll return to El Calafate around 4:30–5:00 PM.

This tour requires moderate physical fitness, as walking on uneven terrain is involved.

ITINERARY

Depart from El Calafate and head east along Provincial Route 5, then north along National Route 40. You’ll pass by Lake Argentino, the Santa Cruz River and La Leona River, with sweeping views of the Andes.
Stop (~15 min) at historic Hotel La Leona for photos and history.
Continue west along Lake Viedma’s southern shore toward Cerro Los Hornos (Estancia Santa Teresita).
Arrive at the petrified forest site around noon. Begin a guided walk among fossil logs scattered across the terrain—learn how these trees turned to stone, discover paleontological insights, and appreciate the scale of change over millions of years.
Mid-tour lunch break.
Return trip begins ~2:00 PM with a stop again at Hotel La Leona “parador.”
Arrive back in Calafate between 4:30 and 5:00 PM.
