Departure from El Calafate
Pick-up is provided from your accommodation in El Calafate.
Travel approximately 30 km outside the town toward Estancia La Catalina, leaving behind the brighter city lights and entering the open Patagonian landscape.
Astronomy Experience
At the estancia, you will receive a warm poncho and meet the astronomer leading the activity.
The experience begins with an introduction to the southern night sky. Learn how to recognize constellations, understand the position of the stars and use the sky as a natural reference for orientation.
The guide will also share astronomical stories, mythology and traditional interpretations of the sky from Indigenous cultures of the Americas.
After the introduction, use telescopes and binoculars to observe the celestial objects visible that evening.
What can be seen varies throughout the year and depends on weather and lunar conditions, but may include stars, planets, the Moon, the Milky Way, nebulae and other deep-sky objects.
A night-sky photograph of you or your group will also be taken during the experience.
Refreshments & Return
Finish the evening with a selection of hot drinks and sweet treats at the estancia.
Tea, coffee, mate cocido and traditional snacks such as alfajores, cakes and dulce de leche may be served.
After approximately two hours at Estancia La Catalina, return to El Calafate for drop-off at your accommodation.
